{{Quote|developer=Knockback|source=|quote =
Knockback here. I've worked on dungeons such as "Eyes of Stone," "The Snitch," "A Study In Sable" and the Thunderholme adventure area, and I'm here to update you folks on some of the things we're currently building for DDO.

Upcoming dungeons in Update 24

Update 24 will be previewed on Lamannia starting this weekend, so now seems like a good time to unveil its dungeons. Get ready for some surprises!

First up in Update 24 is a new content pack, Heart of Madness. The plane of Xoriat is encroaching on Eberron once again and the result is three dungeons full of Xorian insanity. Both the Lord of Eyes and the Lord of Stone are back, as well as some other fan favorite characters. (Hint – one of the dungeons is named "Fashion Madness.") The centerpiece of the pack is "Terminal Delirium," the follow-up to two of our most popular dungeons. Once again you'll be returning to the Sleeping Spell Inn, and once again you'll be seeing—and be turned into—some very unusual things. Heart of Madness is CR 18 Heroic/26 Epic, and is a paid pack (450 Turbine Points; free to VIPs of course.)

Also coming in Update 24 is a Forgotten Realms dungeon themed to tie in with Wizards of the Coast's Tyranny of Dragons storyline. You'll infiltrate a Cult of the Dragon base while on the trail of the fabled White Dragon mask. "The Mask of Deception" is CR 16 Heroic/30 Epic, and is free to everyone.

Hey, what happened to Anauroch?

Earlier we had mentioned Anauroch as one of the places we wanted to go in 2014. Obviously that's not happening.

Why the change? It's tempting to blame it all on Xorian madness, but the truth is we've been listening to what excites you guys when it comes to D&D settings. We may still make it to Anauroch eventually, but don't expect it any time soon. It's a long, long walk from Cormyr. Instead of the blazing hot desert, we're going someplace cooler instead.

Future plans and Update 25

So what kind of cool things led to the detour away from Anauroch? One of them will be coming in Update 25. Since The Haunted Halls of Eveningstar was received so well, we've decided to adapt another classic pen-and-paper module to DDO. Rather than blabbing on, I'll skip right to the awesome part and give you five simple words:

The Temple of Elemental Evil.

Yep, we will be creating our own version of the original, classic Temple inside DDO. We're very excited about adapting one of the most famous modules in Dungeons and Dragons history, and we hope you are too.

In the meantime, though, we have a date with insanity. Hope to see everyone this weekend on Lamannia for a preview of Update 24!

{{Quote|developer=Feather of Sun|source=|quote=Today, I've added the following into our internal development build. This is the build that will eventually become Update 21. Depending on circumstances and approvals, some of this may be able to be pulled into a patch before Update 21.

The Burst prefixes will come back. I've seen a lot of people asking for them. While they're not as powerful as the "Flaming II" you could get instead of Flaming Burst, but they are very close and not everything needs to be exactly equal... it does help to have some variety.

* Flaming Burst
* Shocking Burst
* Icy Burst
* Acid Burst

New weapon AoE damage prefixes that can appear on Epic-level loot.
The below list of prefixes appear rarely in addition to one of the normal things you'd get as a prefix on your item. They match roughly in theme- as an example, Tempestuous could come with either Shocking or Shrieking paired with it.
Some of these are old names, but they do new things.

* Infernal - 2% Chance On Hit: A blast of flame ignites your target, dealing 4 to 16 damage per Minimum Level of this item to all nearby enemies.
* Meteoric (Can only be found in the highest level treasure) - 2% Chance On Hit: A falling star strikes your target, dealing 3 to 18 Fire Damage and 1 to 6 Bludgeoning Damage per Minimum Level of this item to all nearby enemies. Affected foes must also make a DC (20+Item Level) Reflex Saving Throw or be knocked prone.
This wasn't supposed to be in the Update 17 build. It must have piggybacked in with something else. Since Update 17 goes live soon, it's too late to take it out, unfortunately.

This is an early product of artwork to create a "Brilliant Energy" weapon appearance, like the core 3.5 D&D weapon ability, to be used in future updates.

Sorry guys: We know this isn't working properly right now, and the weapon graphics for this can go away temporarily when zoning.

The final Brilliant Energy weapon type will likely not look like this- this was an early, internal work in progress.

We'll look into reverting this weapon to its prior appearance in a patch after Update 17, until Brilliant Energy weapon appearances are finished.
The intention for this item is indeed to make it count for either item in the set bonuses- I think at one point I responded to a PM saying that I wanted to make it work as such. Because I'm considering revisiting some Epic items again soon, this one has the potential to make that list, but I'm trying to start with the Epics that are truly terrible first and work my way up. On the topic of more Epic quests, it isn't that we don't ever intend to do these again. Creating Epics takes more work than you might think and we've received a lot of feedback that the current version is not appealing enough to many of our players. Since we know the system is in flux, and we are currently focused on developing adventure packs which are playable for level 20 characters, we are not currently giving Epic a lot of focus. Our content this year is pretty much increasing in level as we go, so once we get the level 20 House Cannith content further underway, it will be time to start thinking about more Epics...

A Look at 2024, The Year of the Dragon – Producer's Letter
(img)

Greetings Everyone!

Today I wanted to tell you about some of our plans for the year in Dungeons & Dragons Online. I hope you all had a fantastic 2023, and that you’re ready for even more adventures. I’m having a bit of adventure myself at the moment due to a winter storm, writing a draft of this Producer’s Letter in the dark by candlelight, with one of those old timey writing things ... a pen and some paper.

In a way it’s kind of thematically appropriate; it has me thinking about when I used to write D&D adventures by hand for my friends. It’s been nice to pause and reflect on those endearing D&D moments, because it is the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons! That’s half a century of people lovingly making their character builds, their campaigns, and playing with their friends. And yeah, sure, a lot of tools and technologies have changed in 50 years, but what hasn’t changed is the passion and creativity of everybody who loves D&D. That’s a huge reason why it has endured. As luck would have it, the 50th anniversary happens to fall on the lunar year of the Dragon! How fantastic is that? So that means we’re going to celebrate big. Dragon big!

I am pleased to announce that starting at DDO’s Anniversary in February we will be rolling out a yearlong celebration in honor of D&D’s 50th Anniversary! From free gifts to new features, each month during our Year of the Dragon celebration there will be something exciting for our players. Be sure to check in with us on February 7th when we will reveal what each month’s Year of the Dragon surprise will be! The fun starts during DDO's 18th anniversary on February 28th. As a hint to how this starts, the first surprise will be a dragon themed archetype. The “Year of the Dragon” celebration will last all the way until next year’s anniversary.

To help get your friends and family ready for the Year of the Dragon, I’m also pleased to announce the return of a special coupon code that can be used to get a ton of free quest packs! Use coupon code: FREEDDO2024. (Available through 11:59pm Eastern (-4 GMT) Sunday, February 11th 2024.)

Learn more about all the quest packs that this code grants and how to apply the code here!

In addition, we have lots of other excitement planned in 2024. Here’s an early sense of what those updates will entail:

By popular demand, our next major Expansion in the summer will take place in a fan favorite D&D location: Myth Drannor! It is among the more infamous places in the Forgotten Realms and we’re very excited to bring it to life! The level cap will increase to 34, and I’m looking forward to one of Myth Drannor’s hallmarks: Wild Magic areas. Myth Drannor is a place where opening yourself to chaos can allow you to tap into greater power. It’s that power that has attracted the Red Wizards of Thay. Players will need to explore both the ruins of Myth Drannor, and interfere with the plans of the Red Wizards. It’s the quintessential D&D and dungeon delving environment. Presale for the Expansion will start in June.

In addition to two quest packs this year and our Expansion, there will also be a Dynamic Event with quests to unlock. Dynamic Events differ from our seasonal festivals in that while they are limited time activities, they are focused heavily on serious story narrative and DDO canon, and some aspects of them don’t repeat once the DDO community has advanced the story. They’re also meant to have elements that let players experience the event together, with collaboration and peer information sharing. After reviewing feedback on the Illithid Invasion, this Dynamic Event will be inclusive of all character levels since the Illithid Invasion was fairly end game focused. It will take the place of our Hardcore season so that all players can participate. We're anticipating that the event will be some time in the fall, though Dynamic Events may not always be during fall going forward.

With the necessary Store infrastructure upgrades completed last year, we’ll also be looking to roll out the updates to the VIP program in the spring this year. We’ve made changes to the proposed rewards based on player feedback, and we’ll bring more information on the VIP program soon.

We’ll update Crystal Cove and Night Revels to support the higher-level cap, and Night Revels will also get a new dungeon this year.

If you’re new to the game, or returning after a little break, I just want to take a quick moment to recap some of the more recent features and excitement that have been added to DDO for you to enjoy:

* We took players behind the scenes of dungeon making, and even let them help us decide what to build, with a new dungeon called “Catastrophe”. It’s a free quest, and you can also watch the behind-the-scenes video episodes about the making of it on our YouTube Channel. We plan to be at PAX East again this year, and more information about that will be announced soon.
* We’ve continued to expand our selection of Class Archetypes, adding Blightcaster, Dark Hunter, and Acolyte of the Skin. Archetypes have added some fresh play options, so we’re going to continue to add more types of them to the game in different ways. Some will be free, some will be paid, but all will bring new ways for people to shake up their character build dynamics.
* Several pieces of long time DDO content received a sprucing up and higher-level treasures added to make them playable at broader level ranges, including the Chronoscope, Deception in Stormreach, and Attack on Stormreach.
* Players recently worked together to successfully unlock a new set of tough dungeons in Sharn. While the live event is over, the quests that were unlocked are still available for everyone to play for free. These are some of the hardest quests we’ve had for a while, so see if your character has what it takes to best the Illithids there!
* A new treasure modification feature was added to the game known as the Deck of Many Curses. The cards for it first appeared in our aforementioned challenging Illithid Invasion dungeons. During Festivult, a curse introduced the cards to more places in game, and we’re going to go ahead and keep the card drops in the Legendary sagas.

We have even more fun things planned in 2024, so check back with us regularly to see what’s new throughout the year! We’re so glad to have you with us, thanks for reading and we’ll see you in game!

Wolf/Tree build fixes are coming.
The timing has less to do with the severity or priority and more to do with the complexity.
Yes, there is time to fix Warlock before broken Druid abilities. It takes less time to repair a crack than rebuild an entire wall.

Planned Warlock changes are based primarily on data collection and testing.
Warlocks aren't the most powerful damage-dealers in the game right now, but neither are Paladins or Barbarians.
For that matter, we really haven't been hearing that "Melee players are upset that their OP Paladins and Barbarians aren't miles ahead of all the Casters anymore" at all. Even if we had, it would not be the sole deciding factor.

Endgame is not the only measure that counts.
The fact that some changes are necessary is not diminished by the fact that other necessary changes have not happened yet.

Anyway!
Hope everyone is having a fine morning.}}
We have plans to fix all handwraps in the entirety of DDO by making them behave more like all other weapons in the game do. It is because handwraps are considered special and different that there have been so many bugs in the past. It's unfortunate that it's a great deal of work to fix, but it is a large fix across many items and systems (so it takes time no matter what, and extra time to make sure we get it right since it's complicated). Once we do that, we can make new handwraps and handwrap abilities the same as other items and combat styles, instead of having to make special cases for them each time. Then those items will be faster to make and with greatly reduced chance of having bugs (or, at least, the bugs won't just be for handwraps!)}}

* Flaming Burst
* Shocking Burst
* Icy Burst
* Acid Burst

* Glacial - 2% Chance On Hit: A burst of glacial frost chills your target, dealing 7 to 14 Cold Damage per Minimum Level of this item to all nearby enemies.
* Erosive - 2% Chance On Hit: A blast of acid corrodes your target, dealing 3 to 18 Acid Damage per Minimum Level of this item to all nearby enemies.
* Tempestuous - 2% Chance On Hit: A bolt of lightning strikes your target, dealing 1 to 20 Electric Damage per Minimum Level of this item to all nearby enemies.
* Righteous - 2% Chance On Hit: A blast of holy energy strikes your target, dealing 3 to 12 Good Damage per Minimum Level of this item to all nearby non-good enemies.
* Kinetic - 2% Chance On Hit: A burst of magical force strikes your target, dealing 3 to 12 Force Damage per Minimum Level of this item to all nearby enemies.

4 new weapon suffixes: (Bringing the amount of suffixes at each given Enhancement Value to between 12 and 14)

* Humanoid Bane (Combination of Human Bane, Elf Bane, Dwarf Bane, Halfling Bane, Orc Bane, Goblinoid Bane, Monstrous Humanoid Bane, Reptillian Humanoid Bane, and Giant Bane.
* Natural Bane (Combination of Animal Bane, Vermin Bane, Plant Bane, Magical Beast Bane, and Fey Bane)
* Feeding (On Vorpal Hit: Target incurs 1 negative level, you gain Temporary HP)
* Draining (On Vorpal Hit: Target incurs 1 negative level, you gain Temporary Spell Points)

This is just a start. There's a lot more I'd like to do.
Armor, shield, and accessories will get new things as well, as will spellcasting weapons.

This weapon enchantment (or at least its graphic rendering) is being developed. It leaked to Lamannia and probably also live with U17. PnP version:

{{Quote|developer=Feather of Sun|source= |quote=

(2011 State of the Game Producer Letter)
...

(img)

A Letter from Executive Producer Rob Ciccolini – February 2021
Happy 15th Anniversary DDO! We are excited to reach this milestone and are ever-thankful to our players for making this possible. Today I'll be talking about some of our plans for the rest of the year and letting you know what we are looking forward to.

In the coming weeks we will be celebrating in House Phiarlan as we bring out an updated Anniversary Event! This year's event features a few minor updates to the challenge itself along with a large number of new items added to the reward list. We're bringing back all of the House-specific Eberron Cloaks in the rewards list that we gave out a few years ago for our anniversary, in case you missed one or missed it, and we're adding a new cosmetic helm and cosmetic pet as well. We're also going to be distributing two special gifts to everyone! One will be something your character will wear as a cosmetic, and the other is something your character will equip.

The release of the new raid, The Dryad and the Demigod, marks the grand finale of the Fables of the Feywild expansion. This raid features the music of our in-house composer Bill Champagne and we think it is a raid unlike any other you may have seen before. The idea of a “musical raid” has been kicking around for a while in the office, and we think players of all types will find something special here. Anyone who has purchased Fables of the Feywild will have access to this new raid.

This spring brings the first Hardcore League season of 2021 to the game! Our 4th Hardcore Season will feature some new and returning guests in the form of the minions of the Nine Daelkyr Lords. You’ve met the Lord of Eyes and the Lord of Stone, but have you met the rest? We're also planning to run a 5th season of the Hardcore League later this year.

This spring will also bring Update 49 that includes four dungeons where you will help Morgrave University hunt down lost relics in a series of adventures that feel somewhat “Indiana Jones-like”. Alongside this adventure pack the bow combat style is being revamped and will get new animations.

This summer will see the release of the first "mini-expansion" in Dungeons & Dragons Online in the form of the Classic Adventure: The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh! An evil Alchemist's mansion stands alone on a cliff and mysterious lights and hauntings have kept people away despite rumors of great treasure. What is the secret? Debuting alongside this classic adventure will be our next Universal Enhancement Tree called Horizon Walker, which focuses on marking and neutralizing extra-planar and other enemies with a bow. As we get closer to the release of Saltmarsh, we will have more information about what to expect from a DDO mini-expansion, the lessons that we learned from The Lord of the Rings Online’s first mini-expansion last year, and plans to give more value to VIPs.

The fall will feature a set of new adventures and a raid revolving around the Wild Hunt as well as a significant update to our Epic Destiny system. We are restructuring the core of the system, modernizing some trees and redesigning others, and making Epic Destinies more versatile by allowing players to have multiple Destinies active at the same time.

Other things to look forward to this year include a new Monster Manual volume, a free dungeon to wrap up the year, updates to our various festivals, and more! We want to thank you for continuing to make this game and community thrive, and we look forward to making 2021 a fantastic year for DDO!

Producer's Letter - February 2022
Today I’d like to reintroduce myself to everyone. My name is Amanda “Tolero” Grow, and I am the new Producer for Dungeons & Dragons Online. Some of you may remember me from previous roles in Community, Commerce, and other behind-the-scenes work. Severlin and I have worked together closely for years, and I expect that to continue in his role as Executive Producer. Today I’m here to talk about the latest excitement going on with DDO and things to look forward to!

For those who are newer to DDO, a little about me: years ago, circa 2006, I had the great fortune to stumble on what became my all-time favorite game. From that first moment when I heard the Dungeon Master’s voice warning me about broken splinters on the floor (back when the tutorial dungeon was completely different) I was hooked. I went on to work for the game the next year, and DDO and its players have been my great love for approaching two decades now.

In that time there have been many incredible changes, from the transformation into a Free to Play game, to adding Forgotten Realms and other classic D&D content, and a host of big game systems. Since the founding of Standing Stone Games, we’ve brought big additions into the game that my younger fascinate-bard-playing self would have been thrilled by. If I could go back in time and tell myself we were going to get mounts and cosmetic cloaks, go to places like Eberron’s Sharn, or actually fight Strahd in Ravenloft, I’d be beside myself. Just this past year, we’ve gone to the classic tabletop module Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, and we’ve done a major overhaul of the Epic Destiny system.

This year we’ve got more fun planned, and it’s surreal for me to get to be the one to tell you all about it!

What's Happening:
We’ve just jazzed up the Snowpeaks Festival with a new additional challenge quest. If you liked slipping and sliding down Flurry’s ramp challenge you can still do that, but for those looking for a tougher challenge, gather up your Frozen Keys and check out “Too Cold to Continue” by visiting Flurry in the Eberron Hall of Heroes, where you’ll face an uphill climb to try and get the goods!

The next new content you'll see will be Update 53, called "Hunter and Hunted", for levels 7 Heroic and 32 Legendary. This is set in the Feywild universe, where you'll be investigating the mysterious Wild Hunt. Update 53 also includes a new Legendary level raid. You do not need to own the Fables of the Feywild expansion in order to play this adventure pack, which is free to VIPs and available in the DDO Store. Update 53 will be coming out just as we’re heading into one of my personal favorite times of year: DDO’s Anniversary!

16th Anniversary
We are making our 16th anniversary extra sweet by giving away some free stuff from the D&D Player’s Handbook…permanently!

That’s right, when the Anniversary update happens, we will be making the following races and classes from the core D&D Player’s Handbook permanently free for everyone in DDO:
* Races:
** Gnome
** Half-elf
** Half-orc
** Drow
** Wood-elf
** Dragonborn
** Tiefling
* Classes:
** Druid
** Monk
** Warlock

If you have already purchased these races and classes we will be giving you a gift of a Greater Elixir of Discovery for each of the races or classes you own prior to the Anniversary patch! These gifts will be distributed when the patch goes live. Yes, that means between now and when the patch happens if you buy any of the races or classes on the list above, you'll get the gift too as long as it happens before the patch goes live.

For VIPs, we want to thank you by increasing your free Gold Rolls on Daily Dice from once per week to once per day through the end of the year! We’ll post another announcement with further details when the Anniversary patch launches. We’re so grateful for your patronage, and we look forward to seeing even more people building unique characters in DDO for years to come!

Looking Ahead:
Now it’s time for me to tell you about my absolute favorite thing happening this year...

Dinosaurs

(img)

Dinosaurs!

(img)

DINOSAURS!!!

(img)

I think the world underestimates how much the team loves dinosaurs, and this Spring we are about to go to the most dinosaur-laden D&D module of all time: The Isle of Dread! This will be an Expansion, so expect to see fun goodies available in a pre-purchase opportunity this Spring, including the new Tabaxi character race. Later in the Spring when the Expansion launches you will need all your daring to face the threats of Isle of Dread, but one thing I’ll tell you now is that with this Expansion there’s going to be a level cap increase further into Legendary levels, up to level 32. We can’t wait for you to come play it!

After Isle of Dread:
Beyond Isle of Dread, there’s a lot of important things on the radar. On the serious end of the spectrum is improving game performance. For a while now we have focused on creating tools to let us see what's happening so we can be more proactive rather than reactive. We've also created a multi-disciplinary strike team that meets regularly with myself and Sev to focus on what these diagnostics are telling us. Our IT/Ops are tackling the server environment, our DBAs are working on upgrades and efficiencies, and our game engineers and designers focus on problematic monsters, NPCs, and systems that need improvement. Here are some of the things we've done and will be doing:
* We found and fixed a nasty amount of lag in the guts of the Heroic and Reaper Enhancement trees system.
* Another place we found problems was with part of the system that manages people’s class pets (think Druid wolves and Artificer dogs), which was periodically causing huge lag spikes under certain conditions.
* We’ve reconfigured server resource utilization so it’s more efficient, and added some new alarms to let our Operations team better detect excessive CPU load in a way that they couldn’t detect previously.
* We recently adjusted the bandwidth settings of the game, which we suspect was slowing parts of the UI and also giving raiders trouble. The game and player’s characters have grown more complex over time, passing through more events than back when those defaults were set.
* The recent 52.1 patch included some fixes to areas of the Shadowfell landscape that were too performance heavy.
* The engineers just this week were telling me that they’ve pinpointed some lag-causing behavior lurking under the hood of the quest system, which they’re still working through.

I’m very hopeful that by being proactive, we’ll be able to target the worst sources of lag and make a real dent in things as we go.

Here are some other things on the horizon:
* A new Hardcore League this summer! We'll be shaking things up after our winter redux season with a twist, but we're keeping it secret for now. We’ve also identified some server performance optimizations for when the seasons kick off, which should make the opening day and first weekend of Hardcore perform better.
* We will be touching up Crystal Cove, both to help with performance during the event and also to mix the monsters up and keep the rewards relevant.
* We’ll be updating a classic adventure pack so that it is able to be played at higher levels once the level cap increases with Isle of Dread, but I’m not ready to announce details on which pack that is yet.
* There will be another new adventure pack this year as well, where a familiar villain is up to new trouble.
* We’ll be adding some new character build options later on in the year, but I’ll tell you more details about that when we get closer to it.
* There’s even a feature that should be both a boon of better performance and something people have asked about: an updated Character Bank. Not only will we be able to offer more character bank space (finally!), but it’ll perform better from a server perspective too.
* We’ll be updating DDO.com, and after that the forums too, but we’ll have more information on that once we’re ready.

I’m so grateful for all the players who make this possible! I look forward to telling you about new fun things in future letters, which I plan to do regularly throughout the year. I’m also looking forward to seeing you at our DDO livestreams, and other places around the Community. I can’t wait for us to have many more years of adventures together. Have fun, and I’ll see you in game!

Greetings! I’m Producer Amanda “Tolero” Grow, and today I’ll be giving you a look at what’s coming up for DDO in 2023. I hope that your New Years has been off to a wonderful start, and we’re looking forward to more fun and excitement in DDO this year.

If you’re new to DDO or coming back after a long break, here’s a recap of the latest things that have been added to the game: Last year our story took us to the Isle of Dread, where in addition to fighting dinosaurs, players came face to face with the infamous D&D villain Vecna! We had an exciting Hardcore Season in the summer, as players were hunted down by deadly Hounds throughout the game. We added Archetypes to the game, bringing new ways to play and build our D&D classes. And we introduced a major overhaul of the Character Bank, with filters, customizable tabs, and expanded amounts of storage there. Towards the end of 2022 we debuted our latest Adventure Pack which brought players back to Sharn to continue thwarting Vecna and others over the fate of the Planar Eyes.

Now that I’ve covered the big beats of where we’ve been, let’s talk about where we are going next. Our game will be celebrating its 17th anniversary this year with fun free content! We’ll introduce three new free Archetypes as well as a free Dungeon for all players to play.

----

The free quest will set the stage for the upcoming Mini Expansion in the spring, where players will help Morgrave University try and neutralize the threat posed by Vecna. Our long-running story will reach a peak we know you'll want to be a part of! We’ll have a lot more information about the story and content of our mini-expansion as we get closer to it. After that we’ll be kicking off a new Hardcore season this summer with another rules change up, but we’ll release more details about that later.

We spoke last year about work being done to reduce lag and improve game performance, and you saw some elements of that work get deployed in 2022. This work will continue in 2023! We've been focusing on the way the game communicates with itself, along with making some of our more complex systems more efficient behind the scenes. One reason for this focus is that we are able to measure the impact it has, before and after, and while no one fix will banish lag for good, we are able to see the benefits of these small but steady improvements over time. We know you want us to make lag reduction a focus, and we agree!

There are more features and content happening later in the year, such as a Legendary revamp of Droaam content and another Hardcore redux season, but this should give you a good sense of what is in store for the first part of 2023 and beyond. We can’t wait to see you in game!
# I am Vecna, the Whispered One, God of Secrets. Over the eons I have done much and seen more. Conquered worlds. Transcended death. Ripped divinity from the hands of the gods themselves. And yet I have only begun my true mission.
# Secrets. They surround us, hidden in deep shadows, obscure corners, hidden worlds. Secrets that promise knowledge, control, power. Even I do not possess them all, god though I am. That will change. I am building my collection.
# The Isle of Dread was a secret once. An island that moved through the planes, appearing and disappearing on countless worlds. As soon as I learned of it, I determined to add it to my collection.
# Long ago, the Isle of Dread was controlled by the Kopru, ancient rulers over a declining empire. Once the Isle of Dread had been a symbol of their might and power. But in time it had become a millstone around their necks.
# To create the teleporting island, the Kopru had made a bargain with certain powerful Demons. Yet in time they had a falling out. The Kopru came to regret their bargain, as all those who deal with Demons do. And so they turned to me.
# I agreed to drive out the Demons for the Kopru. In return, the Kopru promised to become my loyal followers. The Demons were easily dealt with, and the Isle of Dread was now mine. It was the perfect place to store some of my secrets.
# The Kopru had always held slaves, people stolen from the worlds the island had visited. In time, due to the Kopru's incompetence, these slaves revolted and set up their own village on the south of the island. The Kopru empire's iron grip, it turned out, was naught but rust.
# The Kopru asked me to deal with their little slave revolt. I declined having no interest in their petty squabble. Besides, the Kopru had betrayed the Demons before. No doubt they were now planning on betraying me. Best to keep the Kopru weak and firmly under my control.
# Having grown weak and lazy in their dotage, the Kopru complained constantly about their lack of slaves. Naturally I saw the obvious solution. I am not only the God of Secrets.
# I placed an enchantment on the island that would raise any human who died there as undead. This neatly solved the Kopru's labor problem. And yet they were not grateful. The Kopru acted as if my undead servants were beneath them.
# Defeated by their own slaves, the Kopru have retreated to the ruined temple atop the dormant volcano. From its depths they control the island's teleportation, steering the Isle of Dread to wherever I command. Thus the Kopru have descended from masters of an empire to mere servants.
# The Kopru are too few and too stubborn. They can only be relied on to move the island. For other tasks, I call upon the pirates. Pirates are easily recruited from any world we visit, and easily motivated with a handful of platinum and a bauble or two. They care nothing about secrets. This makes them the perfect tools for me.
# When the island arrives at a new destination, I send out the pirate fleet. The pirates comb the shores of the new world, collecting the items and people I designate. I permit the raiders to keep anything else they fancy. The pirates assume this is all ordinary plunder.
# The most valuable treasures the pirates bring me are the people I specify. Mad visionaries, audacious intellects, world-shaping personalities - I bring them here and add them to my collection. Then I set out to discover their secrets.
# I scan the multiverse constantly, searching for new places to take the island. Not long ago I discovered something astonishing. A whole group of planes had suddenly appeared. It's as if they had been hidden behind a veil - a veil that had been instantly whisked away.
# One of my new discoveries was a new world on the Prime Material Plane. A fascinating place, with its own history, its own little gods, its own obscure secrets. A place called ... Eberron.
# I quickly discovered what had destroyed the veil hiding the new planes: the destruction of the Codex of the Infinite Planes. It had released a vast amount of arcane energy, shredding the veil and scattering an infinite number of fragments throughout the multiverse. Most intriguing. Most intriguing indeed.
# I set about collecting some of the remains of this Codex, attempting to disguise this by employing a dimwitted denizen of the Feywild as my proxy. To my surprise I was thwarted in my attempt - not by another god, but by inhabitants of the strange new world of Eberron. Thwarted by mortals! This was the most intriguing thing of all.
# And now you are wondering - why tell you all this? Why would a god of secrets reveal his own? The answer, of course, is because I want you to know who I am. I want you to understand what has become of you. I want you to see that you are mine.
# You are here by my will. You will remain so long as I decree it. I watch your every step as you stumble through this island of danger and death, and I will find you when I see fit. And then you will hear my judgement.
The Island Appears
The Isle of Dread disappeared as quickly as it appeared, but its arrival shook the foundations of multiple worlds. Its sudden location off the coast of Stormreach has been linked to the aftermath of the destruction of a powerful magical artifact called the Codex of the Infinite Planes, and the Cult of Vecna is allegedly involved. Read more to get up to speed on the story before playing Isle of Dread!

The General and the Codex
The Codex of the Infinite Planes is a massive tome inscribed with intricate writings whose pages continue to turn endlessly, offering portals to other planes of existence for those powerful or foolish enough to attempt mastering it. Arraetrikos, a General of the devil armies of Shavarath, attempted to use the Codex to end the war between Demons and Archons, but the tome exploded into an infinite number of fragments, scattering them across numerous planes and worlds. After his defeat, the remains of the Codex were turned over to the Gatekeepers of Eberron to investigate and keep safe.

Enter the Gatekeepers
The Gatekeepers are a druidic order dedicated to protecting Eberron from extraplanar attack. The group has been collecting as many of the missing Codex pages as possible, first to study them, second to contain the pages safely, and third to prevent evil from using the pages' power. They've discovered that even fragments of these pages have the potential to corrupt anyone who tries to read them, and there appear to be an infinite number of fragments scattered across the worlds. The Gatekeepers have been focusing on recovering larger Codex Pages before they can be used, and adventurers have frequently been called in to help. Despite a huge amount of effort and sacrifice, the recovery of the Codex of the Infinite Planes has proven daunting, with far more pages unrecovered as found.

The Feywild and the Mysterious Stranger
The Gatekeepers guarded the Codex pages they had collected with complex wards. Yet, despite their elaborate precautions, the Codex pages were stolen. Adventurers were sent to the Feywild on a mission of recovery. They discovered that the culprit was an Archfey named Hyrsam, who committed the theft at the behest of a Mysterious Stranger looking to obtain Codex Pages for his own unknown reason. After an extensive battle and discussion, the pages were eventually returned to the Gatekeepers, and the Mysterious Stranger swore revenge.

Dread Sea Scrolls
The novice Gatekeeper Foxpaw is experimenting with methods to destroy Codex Pages, and he recently enlisted the help of adventurers to bring him a magical artifact known as the Conch of Secrets in order to further his work. However, the recovery of the Conch caused the Isle of Dread to appear off the coast of Stormreach, and pirates from the island landed and attempted to steal both the Conch and Foxpaw. The battle was fierce, the pirates were rebuffed, and the Island disappeared.

The cult of Vecna has been sighted in the region, and now a mysterious island has reappeared off the coast. It can’t be a coincidence. Prehistoric dangers await any who set foot on the island’s shores, so only true heroes will be capable of surviving the threats and stopping the cult.

The Isle of Dread is DDO's expansion content, based on classic 1981-1983 D&D expert set adventure module, scheduled for 2022. The original module is set in the southern island of the world of Mystara; in DDO's cosmology, the island suddenly appeared near the coast of Stormreach.
