Keyboard macros and mouse macros allow short sequences of keystrokes and mouse actions to be transformed into other, usually more time-consuming, sequences of keystrokes and mouse actions. In this way, frequently used or repetitive sequences of keystrokes and mouse movements can be automated. Separate programs for creating these macros are called macro recorders.

Keyboard macros have in more recent times come to life as a method of exploiting the economy of MMORPGs. By tirelessly performing a boring, repetitive, but low risk action, a player running a macro can earn a large amount of the game's currency or resources. This effect is even larger when a macro-using player operates multiple accounts simultaneously, or operates the accounts for a large amount of time each day. As this money is generated without human intervention, it can dramatically upset the economy of the game. For this reason, use of macros is a violation of the Terms of Service or EULA of most MMORPGs, and administrators of MMORPGs fight a continual war to identify and punish macro users.

Logitech G15[edit]

Logitech G15 keyboard

DDO is supported by Logitech G15 gaming keyboard, which have 18 macro keys along with quick macro recording function. Turbine promoted this back in GenCon '06, but its level of support is quite minimized in order to prevent botting. Upon installing drivers, the profiler detects DDO and automatically loads a DDO profile complete with a default menu of keystrokes that can be programmed. You also can run the LCD application built into DDO (native support) that shows your Hit-point/Mana bars on the keyboard display.

Bot/banning issue?[edit]

The dev responses in the long long ago were basically, don't build a bot or a complex enough macro that it plays the game for you, but macroing simple functions is OK.

Here's an official stance:

As long as -you-, a living, breathing person, are at the keyboard, it's alright.

No bannings for automation/macro use will happen without a Game Master first trying to communicate with the player in question. That's a fairly rigorous process that includes opening a window on your screen saying to check your tells because a GM has been trying to contact you, and they also wait at least a minute for a response.
