Apparently, this "Classic D&D Red Box" is based on the 1983 Basic Rulebook. However this doesn't make too much sense since DnD's 40th anniversary in 2014 is 40 years since the 1974 "Wood-grain Box".
1983 "Basic Set" Rulebook. In 2013, WotC released similarly designed 4th edition book on its own 30th anniversary.
1974 very 1st edition D&D Rulebook. 2014 is 40 years since this version's first publishing.
