What to Expect

  • Randomly located optional

Known Traps

  • Spears beneath one collapsing floors
  • Blade trap around the fake phylactery with Control Panel (Optional: Destroy the Lich on principle)

Tips and Misc

  • As of Update 62, this quest has been heavily reworked and streamlined. Although parts of the quest are still semi-randomised, there is now a definite path to completion. The passwords now drop in multiple locations and the path to the end quest can bypass most optionals if desired.
    • Note: Each password scroll can now be found in two locations – one fixed location, guarded by an enemy of increasing difficulty, and one random location from the old list. Random scroll locations are shown on the old wiki map.
  • Many optionals (excluding the bonus chest) can be done after completing the quest and are worth significant XP.
  • But, if you want the bonus End chest, make sure your party has accepted all the dark gifts in the dungeon (sarcophagi) and, if not possible, at least interacted (E) with them (Draw Strahd's attention 100/100), before interacting with Zhudun's Vestige!
    • Note: Zhudun's Vestige looks exactly like any other sarcophagi; so it helps that you make sure which one it is via the wiki-map (upper floor, north, yellow [1]).
  • If chasing the Optionals and all the chests, it will save a lot of time if you use the teleporters shown on the wiki map to move between locations.
    • Note: A lever reachable by teleporter 2 enables all.
    • Note 2: Be mindful about one-way teleporters: T3 & T4. The entrance is a yellow flame, and the exit is visible on the wiki map: It has extra edges drawn to it.
  • Ingame map also gives a little help and shows which password number, "tier", is required for unopened doors; for example if password 1 it says: "Door, Tier 1" on the map.
    • Note: This is useful to find which doors you haven't opened yet (optional quest)

Simple Path to Completion

Note: This route is based on reaching the three fixed password locations and completing the quest as quickly as possible. It skips all optionals, including the bonus end chest for opening all sarcophagi, and requires three boss fights that can potentially be bypassed. You may potentially be able to skip sections if you come across randomly located scrolls by chance while exploring.

First, head into the temple and speak to Kasimir and Madam Eva (both now located at the entrance.) Madam Eva will draw a card showing the location of the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind. Note that picking this up is now optional – Kasimir will give you a copy when you complete his quest. Finally, read the notes at Kasimir's feet to get the first password, Yantar, which will allow you to open tier 1 doors by "speaking" to them. (Each door's tier is shown on the minimap and the number of tiles in front of it.)

Next, go through the door at the central south side of the lower floor and down the ramp to the east side, where a golem protects the Mrak scroll.

After this, head to the door at the central north side of the lower floor. After a couple of doors, you'll get to a Tier 4 door. Next to this, on the wall, is a set of ladders leading up to a platform from which you may reach the Etherna scroll, guarded by Heinrich Stolt. Heinrich is able to use a couple of the nearby teleporters, so you may have to pursue him through them. While you are here, use the Orange Lever (left of the portal) to activate all the remaining teleporters. If you want to turn off the statue's attacks you face 3 levers when you first enter the lever room; after activating the Orange Lever, activate the Left for the left arm, Middle for the eyes, and Right for the right arm (as per the note in the drawbridge room).

The length of the path to the library depends on your ability to detect the secret doors in the temple:

  1. Shortest path:
    1. Jump down to the bottom floor and go to the east treasury (Miser 2).
    2. Detect the secret door and head up to the library.
  2. Path without secret doors and jumping (variant 1):
    1. Jump down and run up the east stairs; go east and then immediately north through the Mrak door.
    2. Go further north – in the next room is a teleporter to the Death Slaad room.
    3. To the north is the Arch-Lich Exethanter, whom you may handle this or that way.
    4. Go through the Maverus door to reach the library.
  3. Path without secret doors and an optional and two chests on the fly (variant 2):
    1. Jump down to the bottom floor and head straight west. At the intersection, go south and then immediately west again.
    2. You may ignore the enemies in the room; use the teleporter in the northwest corner.
    3. Get some XP, loot the chests and return through the teleporter.
    4. Use the teleporter in the opposite corner; you arrive in the Death Slaad room – be careful.
    5. To the north is the Arch-Lich Exethanter, whom you may handle this or that way.
    6. Go through the Maverus door to reach the library.

After this, head up to the room in the central northern corridor, and open an auto-detectable secret door. This leads to the Vestige of Zhudun. The interaction dialogue now gives the option to bypass or watch the long cutscene with Kasimir and his formerly dead sister Patrina. If you want to watch the whole thing, you must follow Kasimir through the portal to Ravenloft and back, then speak to Patrina and give her the Maverus password. (If you don't, here's a brief summary – Kasimir revives Patrina, but she's still loyal to Strahd and summons him. He promptly re-murders her.)

At this point, you must then fight several orange-named vampiric adventurers (backed up by Ghasts, if you got the Draw Strahd's attention optional.) Afterward, speak to Kasimir one more time – if you don't have the Holy Symbol yet, he will give it to you. Either way, the quest is now complete.

Optionals

  • The location of the optional Holy Symbol of Ravenkind is semi-randomized but will be given by Madam Eva at the entrance, according to the list in the subsection below. Note that this optional cannot be completed after finishing the quest, as if you get there without the Symbol, Kasimir will give it to you instead.
    • You cannot complete this optional if the location card is 'Soldier' and you skip the scene.
  • To draw Strahd's attention, you must interact with ALL Amber Sarcophagi other than Zhudun's before speaking to Zhudun
    • There are 20 sarcophagi giving 5 points each.
    • This includes empty sarcophagi and also the one inhabited by Tenebrous.
    • The Vestige of Zhudun no longer gives points.
  • Each of the three fixed scroll locations is guarded by one of the three guardians (a Shield Guardian, Heinrich Stolt and Exethanter the Absent-minded Lich.)
  • Harkotha's Vigilance appears in the crypts when all skeletons there are killed. Note that the door on the stairs seals until he is killed.
  • Helwa the Red (the "disturbance") spawns in the west wing when all the wolves and Mountain Folk are killed. Her arrival is announced when this happens, but she won't attack unless you enter the bottom west hall.
  • Baba Yana appears in the east treasury or in the tunnel behind – but only when the last Barovian Witch is killed. (There are two groups – one on your second visit to the west shrine and one in front of a Mrak door to the east.)
  • Behind one of the secret doors (located in the central Eastern square room) is an inert Shield Guardian. To repair it you will need the Odd Necklace which may be dropped by Vilnius (located in the upper East octagon room.) Note that Vilnius won't always drop the amulet (it seems to fail to spawn if you kill him too quickly) and will run away if you enter the room and then leave him alone for more than about 20 seconds. Completing this optional requires an Artificer or a suitably high Repair skill (+26 was enough on Elite).
  • You can get two optionals from Exethanter (three counting the aforementioned Guardians one) if you restore his memory and then break his phylactery, triggering a fight and allowing you to kill him (the phylactery is behind an auto-findable secret door disguised as a bookshelf.) If you choose to fight him without restoring his memory, he cannot be killed until his Phylactery is destroyed (note this approach will yield only one chest.)

Holy Symbol Locations

  • The Holy Symbol of Ravenkind has several possible locations depending on which card Madame Eva draws.
    • One is located in the miniature scale Castle of Ravenloft in the upper western octagon room. (Raven card: "I see a castle of parchment upon a round, wood table. I see many tomes.")
    • One is the absent-minded lich room (Broken One card: "I see a secret place. I see a dead man who has forgotten his name. There is something here which is hidden from me. Magic may mend what words cannot.")
    • One is the antechamber to the Lich room, which has multiple Death Slaads guarding it. (Hooded One card: "I see a chamber of hidden malice and vigilance by fiends bound by ancient contracts.")
    • If the Miser card is pulled, the Symbol may be in either the east or west treasury; these are in the northern part of the bottom floor, one on either side of the statue in the main hall. (Miser card: "I see a room carpeted in coins of gold, and among the coins are bones of those who sought it. Beware of hidden guardians!")
    • As another option the Symbol of Ravenkind will be in the NE-most hexagonal room with Amber Sarcophagi and a few flaming skulls. (Traitor card: "I see a vault secured within the earth. Guarded by amber, duty, and fire. Beware the coward.")
    • Patrina's prison in the endgame. (Soldier card: "I see a place of rest and regrets, not within the temple itself, but somewhere near, where treachery begets scorn and misery.")
    • The first room of the library. (Wizard card: "'I see a library, untouched by centuries. Not a page yellowed or crumbling, every one of them blank and yet covered in lies.")

Dark Gifts received from Amber Sarcophagi

The buffs generally grant profane bonuses, last for one hour and are not removed on leaving adventure. Accepting a dark gift or dying with one active will spawn a ghoul to attack you and your party. These buffs stack with one another.

  1. Dark Gift of: Dahlver-Nar, He of the Many Teeth: You'll be able to resurrect when you die, it said. (Resurrect on death)
  2. Dark Gift of: Delban, the Star of Ice and Hate: Ice and Hate will be your allies, it said. (+15 Cold Spell Power, Hate-magnet-like effect)
  3. Dark Gift of: Drizlash, the Nine-Eyed Spider: You'll be as nimble as a spider, it said. (+4 Dexterity)
  4. Dark Gift of: Ferke, Queen of Poxes: Your wrath will make your foes envy the dead, it said. (+15 Acid spell power, +1d6 Acid Damage on your Unarmed attacks; no such buff applies to Handwraps)
  5. Dark Gift of: Great Taar Haak, the Five-Headed Destroyer: Everyone will know their weakness and inferiority to you, it said. (+4 Strength, +3% Doublestrike, +10 Intimidate)
  6. Dark Gift of: Khirad, the Star of Secrets: You'll see traps and opportunities where others see nothing, it said. (+5 Spot, +10 Search, +10 Disable Device)
  7. Dark Gift of: Norganas, the Finger of Oblivion: The force of your spells will match your personality, it said. (+15 Force Spell Power)
  8. Dark Gift of: Savnok the Inscrutable: Your brilliance will only be matched by your capacity for evil, it said. (+4 Intelligence, +10 Bluff)
  9. Dark Gift of: Seriach, the Hell Hound Whisperer: A pair of contractually obligated Hell Hounds will follow you into battle, it said. (Summons two friendly Amber Temple Hellhounds)
  10. Dark Gift of: Shami-Amourae, the Lady of Delights: You will know what's good for you, it said. (+4 Wisdom)
  11. Dark Gift of: Sykane, the Soul Hungerer: Your ferocity in battle will feast on the souls of the slain, it said. (Vampirism on melee attacks)
  12. Dark Gift of: Tarakamedes, the Grave Wyrm: You will leap over deep chasms in a single bound, it said. (+15 Jump)
  13. Dark Gift of: the Vampyr: You will know how to turn into a vampire lord, it said. – (flavor gift, no effect)
    • In the pen-and-paper original, a character foolhardy enough to follow the Vampyr's instructions would become a vampire under the DM's control. However, the buff expires on leaving the Temple and DDO only allows player-versus-player combat in Taverns and the Arena, so this sarcophagus does nothing.
  14. Dark Gift of: Vaund the Evasive: You'll be better at something rather vague, it said. (+10 Tumble, +10 Bluff, +20 Dodge)
  15. Dark Gift of: Yog the Invincible: You will be invincible, it said. – (+4 Constitution, -10 Movement Speed)
  16. Dark Gift of: Yrrga, the Eye of Shadows: You will know how meaningless existence is, it said. (True Seeing)
  17. Dark Gift of: Zantras, the Kingmaker: You won't take no for an answer, it said. (+4 Charisma, +10 Intimidate, +10 Diplomacy, Intimidating Presence)
  18. Dark Gift of: Zrin-Hala, the Howling Storm: Your fury will lash out at your foes with lightning and thunder, it said. (+15 Electrical Spell Power))
  • There are several sarcophagi that grant no buff; a number are broken or empty, but one contains the spirit of Tenebrous, the first Lich, who refuses to grant you a buff as he considers you unworthy. You can vandalise his sarcophagus, if you like.
