Automatic listing[edit]

Shouldn't this list be generated automatically by categories? Tihocan 14:40, March 8, 2006 (EST)

Normally I'd say yes, except that the author has listed them in the order players will find them. Something like the Dungeons page, however, definitely should be a category, as they're listed by hand alphabetically. If the order isn't important enough here, then I agree these should be categorized and automatically listed. Dedridd 15:50, March 8, 2006 (EST)
Right, though I'm not sure the order really matters. Tihocan 16:32, March 8, 2006 (EST)

Conversation about level of detail to include/leave off for City Zones[edit]

The Twelve‎; 02:13 . . (+335)‎ . . ‎Technical 13 (Talk | contribs)‎ (Undo revision 392047 by Meander (talk) - why are we removing NPCs that are in the area?) [rollback 1 edit] [4 users ☺] moved here by meander (ContribsMessage) 13:15, August 3, 2018 (EDT)

  • Hi hi, there needs to be a conversation about what level of detail will/won't be included into a City/Outdoor Zone page. In the above comment, I had put in unnamed bystanders to the U39 update as part of the "play" that is going on. However, over time, unnamed NPCs add up and do players really come to the wiki to see the chit-chat of unnamed/ non-interactive NPCs? Careful consideration made me think they only be used by a small number ddo wiki users. If so, then I agree that they add clutter to a page.
Our test example is the panhandler in the Marketplace...
  1. Does he belong in the wiki? Why? Why not?
  2. If so, where?
      • Personal note: I have yearned for the city pages to be more than they are since 2012. I am teaching the next generation of DDO players(and D&D) tactics, roleplay, game etiquette and to use the resources available to them. The kids in the neighborhood are looking at these pages and they asked me to do something about it. For them, I came. So to put personal perspective here, there ARE true newbs entering the game, and they are not a small bunch.

  • This is the issue. If all NPCs aren't listed on the pages for the places/areas they are then they show up in Special:LonelyPages and/or Special:DeadendPages of which neither is desirable. This is why they need to be listed/linked to from the places where they are found.  👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 15:52, August 3, 2018 (EDT)
    • Create a page List of NPCs in The Harbor and have it link all the NPCs in the Harbor. A page being in Special:LonelyPages is a minor issue at best since in this wiki, we use category navigation A LOT. A wiki like Wikipedia doesn't use category navigation and thus Special:LonelyPages means something more than it does here. In any case, the needs of the internal mechanisms of the wiki do not drive the page content. Page content drives the mechanisms. What I mean by that is that we should NEVER degrade the content of the articles just so Special:LonelyPages number can drop. Faltout (ContribsMessage) 18:04, August 3, 2018 (EDT)
      • There's not enough content to validate the need to split every zone out into list of area pages. I don't care if the list is a collapsed section in the [[Area]] page, but it needs to be on that page where it will be most useful. Our [[Area]] pages aren't that big they can't hold a dozen NPCs in a list.  👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 18:11, August 3, 2018 (EDT)
        • Ok then, a collapsed list/table of the NPCs in an area would be fine. I don't see any counter arguments to keep the Important NPCs to a minimum, so I'll go ahead and delete the extra ones in The Twelve. Faltout (ContribsMessage) 18:26, August 3, 2018 (EDT)
          • Put them in a collapsed table, don't delete them. I've restored them.  👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 21:56, August 3, 2018 (EDT)
