I have had over 500 items in one mail box and over 200 on several for at least two months now. No loss of messages that I know of. The full mailbox workaround has worked for me in the past, but it's not 100%. I haven't tested it, just got it to work for me when I need it. Incidentally although the mailbox can be used to some extent to replace getting extra inventory and a common bank, I would recommend spending the money on the common bank.
