Talk:Use Magic Device

From DDO wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Is this skill called 'Use Magic Device' or 'Use Magical Device' in the game? I'm seeing it referred to both ways throughout the wiki. Dedridd 06:50, February 16, 2006 (PST)

I think the description is wrong. AFAIK every magic item has a certain UMD requirement. To use simple magic items you need a total score of at least 6 for example. There is no die roll included, it just checks your current skill and gives a "Go/No". Can anyone share his/her experiences?--Ziu 15:52, February 24, 2006 (EST)

No, for wands at least this has changed in the 5.0 beta patch. But should be checked again -- Tihocan 17:10, February 24, 2006 (EST)
I can verify - this is a die roll now. I've got a Melf's wand on my bard that fires about 2/3 of the time. 1/3 it (I believe uses a charge and) does nothing. This got changed because practically everyone was taking UMD for cure light wands, because wands are overly common in the game. Rather than reduce how often they appear, they made them unusable except to dedicated UMD people. KakarisMaelstrom 17:55, April 27, 2006 (EDT)
Since I guess this is no longer disputed, I am removing the category. Elliott Cable - ?+¿ - ‹·› 02:19, April 28, 2006 (EDT)

Note from 24.131[edit]

"The Use Magic Device skill is a class skill for Bards and Rogues, and a cross-class skill for all others. It is a trained only skill, meaning its use can not be attempted without training at least one rank." - Is this true? I have made several accidental 'attempts' when using an arcane scroll on a divine character without training a rank. User:24.131.94.245

Not sure. I'll let one more learned than I repli. Just cleaned up your message (-: Elliott Cable - ?+¿ - ‹·› 12:39, June 26, 2006 (EDT)
It's not a trained-only skill in DDO. Even if you have 0 ranks, you can attempt to use items, although you'll fail the vast majority of times. Sonil 13:02, June 26, 2006 (EDT)
It's still a trained-only skill in DDO, as can be seen by the (n/a) on your character sheet (like how Open Lock and Disable Device work). Due to a bug, you get a roll, but you fail EVERY time, even if you have a high charisma and roll a 20. -- User:72.74.236.194 18:01, June 26, 2006 (EDT)
Interesting, did you make a specific experiment to test it? Tihocan 11:47, July 11, 2006 (EDT)
I would suggest making an 18 cha non-bard/rogue and going into the Combat Magic training thing on newbie island. Try using the Wand of Detect Secret Doors. If you *can* use UMD untrained, it would succeed on a 16+ roll. Sonil 12:46, July 11, 2006 (EDT)
I just rolled a paladin with 18 charisma and the feat: Skill focus UMD. giving me a total modifier of +7 to umd. I put no skill points into UMD at character creation and my skills tab on the character sheet shows UMD n/a in all 4 catigories including the ability mod & misc mod columns. I attempted to use the scroll of umd in the magic training on newbie island ( its a scroll not a wand as Sonil stated above. I rolled a 2 (+0): Failure. So the skill does indeed require putting in at least 1 skill point.Drydorn 15:06, July 11, 2006 (EDT)
Scroll, my bad, it's been a while since I've been in there :) What happens if you roll a 20? Sonil 17:04, July 11, 2006 (EDT)
Hehe, yes, the question is: even if you can't get your skill bonus, can you still succeed if your roll is high enough? Not really interesting, but funny ;) Tihocan 11:53, July 14, 2006 (EDT)
