Template talk:Adpack

From DDO wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

the rationale behind this template is so that editors/contributors can have a better way of saying that an area or quest needs access to a particular adventure pack, instead of just saying "This is Pay-to-Play", which is a misleading statement because F2P and Premium is not required to pay real money to get access to adpacks. Is red too distracting or alarming? ;-) -Sef326 05:39, November 26, 2009 (EST)

To me, this template creates nonintuitive text/link(s). Using "Tangleroot Gorge" as an example with underlines for links (just here, not on the actual pages), it currently creates "Requires Access to Tangleroot Gorge adventure pack" (only a link to the list of adventure packs, e.g., Assault on Splinterskull) OR "Requires Access to Tangleroot Gorge Adventure Pack" (links to the Tangleroot Gorge page and to the list of adventure packs, e.g., The Hobgoblins' Captives). I don't know how it chooses between the first and second. I would like to change it to "Requires Access to the Tangleroot Gorge Adventure Pack" (only a link to the Tangleroot Gorge adventure pack). On the Tangleroot Gorge page itself, it could be "Main page for the Tangleroot Gorge adventure pack" (only a link to the list of adventure packs) with perhaps an orange text background instead of a the blue one used for the quests in the adventure packs. Anyone object? GregJ 14:15, October 24, 2011 (EDT)

I see your point; however, it has pretty much been established that the name of the pack is the link to the pack and adventure pack is a list of packs. People tend to not like changes in how things work. What I may suggest, and/or do myself, is to instead change the color of the second link and make the popups of where the link goes under the mouse cursor be more specific. ShoeMaker 09:45, October 27, 2011 (EDT)

Sorry for the delayed response. I thought I would get an email when a page on my watchlist was changed.

I like your idea of a different color; it would resolve confusion, except when someone had visited both links recently. My annoyance with the present form was prompted by the page for Tangleroot Gorge. Any idea why it is not working like adpack intends? Tangleroot GorgeGregJ 10:30, November 5, 2011 (EDT)

It seems to be working fine to me.. I also took the liberty of adjusting the color of "adventure pack" to green.. ShoeMaker 12:01, November 5, 2011 (EDT)

Oh yeah, and now I've gone and clarified the popups.. Big Grin ShoeMaker 12:14, November 5, 2011 (EDT)

atm it appears your edits have broken all adpack linking throughout the wiki, except tangleroot gorge. → Shade 12:36, November 5, 2011 (EDT)

Yes, most links on quests say {{Adpack|adpack=Tangleroot Gorge}} and the recent changes assume you don't have the braces around the pack name, like this {{Adpack|adpack=Tangleroot Gorge}}.

Results:

DDO Point icon.png Requires access to adventure pack: Tangleroot Gorge

vs.

Can you fix the template, or do we need to remove the braces on every usage of the template? Also, why ever include the adpack= part? {{Adpack|adpack=Tangleroot Gorge}} works fine doesn't it? Backley 01:27, November 6, 2011 (EST)

My most recent edits removed the need for "adpack=", changed some colors, and added some clearer popups. I put in auto-linking because I had thought it was already there and I might have removed it in my process of adding the other stuff.. Can simply remove it again.. It's not a big deal.. Cool Face ShoeMaker 02:01, November 6, 2011 (EST)

Before and presently, for me, "Tangleroot Gorge" on the Tangleroot Gorge page is bolded and is black and is not a clickable link. It shows the popup help for it and "adventure pack," however. I am using the up-to-date version of IE9.→ GregJ 12:45, November 5, 2011 (EDT)

I hope you expect it to be that way.. There is no way or reason for it to have a redundant link back to itself. ShoeMaker 02:01, November 6, 2011 (EST)

So basically, we want the braces around "Tangleroot Gorge" for, say, Assault on Splinterskull and the quest pages, but NOT for the Tangleroot Gorge page itself?

Is there a way to do a switch that will de-link? So, say, "adpack|1|Tangleroot Gorge" will yield

Tangleroot Gorge adpack icon.jpg
DDO Point icon.png Requires access to adventure pack: Tangleroot Gorge

but removing the switch ("adpack|Tangleroot Gorge") makes it a link, for

Or is that too complicated and too much work and unnecessary and my brain's not working properly after limited sleep the last couple of nights?→ LrdSlvrhnd 05:02, November 6, 2011 (EST)

Using a switch to link stuff in the template would be more work than just adding the brackets to the ones we want linked. ShoeMaker 15:22, November 6, 2011 (EST)

Ah, I picked the wrong example (from memory). It was also that way for at least one of the quests ("Tangleroot Gorge" not being a link). GregJ 07:02, November 6, 2011 (EST)

Is it working as everyone wants and expects at this point? I mean, the only original intent was to change the color of "adventure pack" and to put in more descriptive popups to reduce confusion. ShoeMaker 15:22, November 6, 2011 (EST)

I hate the pop-ups! They prevent me from clicking the link (or make it hard at least). Are they really needed? At least the first one does not offer any additional information compared to what's in text.
normal text: Requires access to Demon Sands adventure pack
popup text: Demon Sands adventure pack

Huh? Redundancy is redundant. And the second one I certainly would not miss either. Or would it be possible at least to move pup-up windows few pixels down?

If the idea is to visually differentiate between pack name and advpack link, let's make only pack name bold. The text is already in a blue box, so it stands out sufficiently. The green color is an overkill imho. See below→ User:Cru121 09:34, November 9, 2011 (GMT+1)

Requires access to Demon Sands adventure pack The example messed up my post, I had to put it outside. --Cru121 04:02, November 9, 2011 (EST)
Or let's reorder the text to eliminate the ambiguity:
Required adventure pack: Tangleroot Gorge
Requires adventure pack: Tangleroot Gorge

I could make a minor adjustment to cause the popup text to be a click-able link as well I believe.. Let me give it a try.. I'll also see what I can do about removing the first popup in certain circumstances where it may offer no value. ShoeMaker 08:27, November 9, 2011 (EST)

I prefer Cru121's idea to remove the green and replace it with something that still visually differentiates the two links. 'Adventure pack' shouldn't draw attention to itself. GregJ 08:27, November 9, 2011 (EST)

Smile I'm glad this is to everyone satisfaction now as:

Background color changes[edit]

I must admit that I prefer the old background color. The yellow variant can be a bit harsh. Kage (ContributionsMessage) 16:17, February 1, 2014 (EST)

I was trying to make it stand out more to the everyday user... the old blue didn't really grab the eye like the yellow does... but i'll play around with some different shades of blue and see what I can come up with... Ague (ContributionsMessage) 16:28, February 1, 2014 (EST)
Made it back to a blue... It's kind of close to the "Visited Link" color for the text, though... Ague (ContributionsMessage) 16:31, February 1, 2014 (EST)
Hey Tech, the popup template needs to be tweaked too so it doesn't show directly over what you are hovering over... Ague (ContributionsMessage) 16:59, February 1, 2014 (EST)
  • I couldn't see the links (that I've not visited in long enough for them to be :unvisited) at all with that blue. I've made it a little more pastel, maybe a yellow or orange or purplish color would be better? Also, I've made the "adventure packs" popup easier to interact with. I think I've already addressed your issue, we just had some overlap in time/posting (as this is an edit conflict post) ShoeMaker (Contributions Message) 17:02, February 1, 2014 (EST)
See my first edit of the template... The yellow was pretty "In Your Face"... Ague (ContributionsMessage) 17:03, February 1, 2014 (EST)
In general I feel that one of the pastel blue colors works well with the new borders and shading. The golden background works too. Kage (ContributionsMessage) 18:28, February 1, 2014 (EST)
