Sp trapthesoul selector.png
Name: Trap the Soul
School: Conjuration
Level: Sor/Wiz 8, Wlk 6
Spell Point Cost: 45
Components: VerbalIcon tooltip.pngVerbal: A verbal component is a spoken incantation. You cannot cast spells that require this component if you cannot act or speak. This has no gameplay applications in DDO, as all characters can always speak and there are no effects which prevent you from doing so., SomaticIcon tooltip.pngSomatic: A somatic component is a measured and precise movement of the hand. You cannot cast spells that require this component if you cannot move causing arcane spell failure resulting in a ruined spell. Spells without a somatic component may be used with disregard to Arcane Spell Failure chance. Note - that characters make the same arm gestures for most spells in DDO, so you can't tell which spells require this component by watching your character's animations., MaterialIcon tooltip.pngMaterial: A material component is one or more physical substances or objects that are annihilated by the spell energies in the casting process. You must have the required items in your inventory. If you run out of the components, the game will not allow you to cast the spell and will instead inform you of what component is missing.: Khyber Dragonshard (Sor/Wiz only)
Metamagic: Enlarge, Heighten, Quicken
Range: Standard
Target: Foe
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will save negates
Spell Resistance: Yes
Cooldown: 5.5 seconds (Wiz), 3.25 seconds (Sor)
Description:

Forces a creature's life force and its material body into a gem on a failed Will save. Although this essentially 'kills' the target, it is not a Death effect and functions on creatures such as Undead but not most Constructs. This spell requires a Khyber Dragonshard as a special material component. It is often helpful to cast Enervation on a target before casting Trap the Soul to reduce the creature's saving throw.

  • Since Update 34 this spell no longer bypasses death ward.

Material Components

Material components needed to cast this spell cannot be skipped with Eschew Feat. The Omnispell Stone item from the DDO Store does work in place of Khyber Dragonshards for all versions of this spell.

The Stone of Change Eldritch Device will convert:

  • 1,000 Fragments → 10 Tiny
  • 100 Tiny → 20 Small
  • 10 Small → 4 Average

or 10,000 Fragments = 100 Tiny = 20 Small = 8 Average

Note that items with the Trap the Soul (item enchantment) have no Hit Die requirement or material component.

Warlock

Warlocks only use a standard level 6 arcane spell component for this spell, making it effectively free for Warlocks.

Material Component cost

  • You can usually find 1 fragment for 1pp on the Auction House. This is 100pp per Tiny Khyber, which can more efficiently be purchased at the Portable Hole for a haggle affected base price of 100pp (just need a character with Haggle of at least 30).

Thus the overall base costs for your standard component supply (stack of 1000) are:

  • Tiny: 100,000 platinum
  • Small: 500,000 platinum
  • Average: 1,250,000 platinum

Soul Gem distribution notice

When in a group the soul gems you create by using this spell can be picked up by any member of the party. This should be considered before using this relatively expensive spell.
