To the administrators' attention - dpl load testing and general discussion[edit]

To the administrators' attention: I'd like to submit this page, and especially its source, as an example of automatic table generation. Consider it a starting point. As usual, nothing is set in stone, everything is open to debate.

Looking around the wiki for prior examples of database usage, I've found references to lst and dpl, investigated both, discovered both were already installed here, found lst unfitting, found dpl so fitting it hurts.

Several envisioned pages described by other editors are effectively possible, and relatively easy to do.

This (working) mock-up is one of a few dpl queries I've put in place. It is my understanding that several editors intended to write something like this (and indeed I got a few good ideas from them), but none had the time to actually see it through. Well, here's one working example for you to review. Please, compare it to https://ddowiki.com/index.php?title=Category:Waist_items&oldid=177833. IMHO, Bladedge rightly commented out the hand-written list because it will always be out-of-date unless someone relentlessly keeps it updated (which is unrealistic and onerous), but the idea itself of having a list like that somewhere is otherwise commendable. While I was at it, I made it a sortable table instead of a list (dpl makes that easy), for my personal preference.

I'm worried about server load and page load times, though. To the best of my current knowledge of dpl (which is just a few days' worth) and wiki software in general (a few weeks' worth), I personally can only optimize the page so far. I believe dpl caching (see link below) is the way to go, but even then I "feel" load times could be high. I'm not in the position to make the required measurements, someone (Xevo?) with access to the actual server or to decent statistics is needed for that.

This query is sponsored by House Cannith's Fabricators Guild and The Twelve. :-)

Oh, by the way, if I somehow missed the notion that dpl is unwelcome, please point me to that discussion and ignore all of the above. :-)

Thank you for your time.

I just want to say that it looks very good and it would be great to have this function. I don't know much about load times, except that too many templates on one page make things slow. This post is basically a bump.

I've got the "decent statistics" I need.

Looking around this wiki in search of wisdom, I found references to the "NewPP" and "served in" comment blocks in each page's HTML source that gets transmitted to the viewer's web browser.

I've already begun quantitative tests to corroborate the qualitative ones. Aldyron (ContributionsMessage) 21:36, September 30, 2013 (EDT)

Useful links to dpl manual[edit]

I can't seem to find a way to put these in a Post template:
