Item description images[edit]

Hi there, I see you have uploaded a bunch of item description images recently. I'd suggest to make the images exactly 420 pixels wide. I am not sure if this is an official policy or not, but the area where pics appear is exactly 420 px wide and the pics look clearer when they don't have to stretch. I simply add white space on both sides. Anyway, just a suggestion. I sincerely hope this will not discourage your future contributions :) --Cru121 (ContribsMessage) 03:31, September 12, 2017 (EDT)

I'm glad you pointed this out! I noticed that sometimes the picture lost quality but I know very little about this kind of thing and had no idea why. From now on I'll make the description pictures exactly 420px. Is there any other places image size in pixels is important? Kkoliver (Contribs⇑ top ⇑) 04:11, September 12, 2017 (EDT)

  • Well there are icons, but I haven't added many icons so I am not really familiar with the usual sizes there. Anyway, happy to hear that my suggestion is well-received. Some editors are touchy (and some admins grumpy :) --Cru121

As a general rule with "presentational" raster images; that display within a web page, that have been given a fixed pixel (placeholder) attribute, i.e both 'height' and 'width' properties via Cascading Style Sheets. Or alternatively given a "height and width override" via 'height' and 'width' attributes of the IMG Element via HTML. It tends to be best using raw image, size dimensions that are similar to the set placeholder dimensions for better display results. The image will be squeezed, stretched or distorted to fill the allotted space of the placeholder 'height' and 'width' values - if present.

If the raw image dimensions are larger than the placeholder, the 'user agent', i.e. browser will adjust the displayed image to fit. If you are enlarging a smaller image, the 'pixilation' will become very obvious if the enlargement is too big, it will be stretched. Of course remember large files are slower to download.

Personally, I wouldn't be overcritical with getting exact dimensions of presentational raw images to match the suggested placeholder values. Though I would try to get something fairly close, if it could effect the page layout in a detrimental way (which it shouldn't anyway, assuming CSS wasn't disabled).

I'm not totally sure which images are being mainly referred to, so without the images in context (within a page) or specific examples of the images it's harder to say. Though with severely limited information; only from reading this discussion, I gather a width of 420px has been explicitly hard-coded in some places? For some of the IMG elements rather than dynamically generated 'height' and 'width', but some of the uploaded images may have been much smaller. Drastically resizing some original raw images from the original screenshots can also cause the raw image to loose sharpness.

  • 420 px is hard coded. --Cru121

  • I actually realized that if I put a broken picture link into a parameter it will output the expected size of the picture into the space the picture was supposed to go. So for the item description pages it just show "420px" and the item picture above it shows "100%" when I break the links. I should be able to know what size to make the images using this information. Thanks for all your help! Kkoliver (Contribs⇑ top ⇑) 03:42, September 13, 2017 (EDT)
  • This is one of the things that will be fixed up with the Named item rewrite.  👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 09:24, September 13, 2017 (EDT)

max dex bonus[edit]

Not saying that you're not right. Perhaps the items were changed. But maybe you are using a character with +2 max dex bonus from somewhere? (perhaps even ship buffs..). Perhaps doublecheck with a fresh character... This is from my talk page 4+ years ago: --Cru121

  • Yup you are right! Good catch. I had ship buffs on but assumed that pluses to max dex wouldn't be applied until the armor was equipped. Once I created a fresh character my mistake was obvious. Thanks Cru! I really appreciate you pointing out things like this. I'll fix any armor description pictures I uploaded with this error. Kkoliver (Contribs⇑ top ⇑) 06:43, September 13, 2017 (EDT)
    • Since this has been a recurring situation, would it be appropriate - in your opinions - to add a note in the template for this to watch out for this issue, or not worth the hassle of figuring out a way to do it - since it mostly seems related to uploading images? Perhaps in a guideline or "policy" someplace? DDOstream (ContribsMessage) 08:47, September 19, 2017 (EDT)
    • I think that a warning about the max dex bonus possibly being wrong on the Named Armor template itself should be avoided because it casts doubt on the validity of the information even if it is correct. However, a note of the template usage section would be useful and could prevent these errors from occurring (it would have for me). I don't know how often the usage section is actually read before someone uploads a picture though... Is it possible to put a link to image upload policy at the top of the Upload File page with the desired criteria of any item description image (correct max dex, unequipped, not-attuned, non-yellow or red, unbound if possible, etc.)? Template for tutorial quests[edit]

Hi, I am making a new template for the journal entries that are not quests as discussed here and here and thought I should let you know. Cheers :) Faltout (ContribsMessage) 10:42, March 6, 2018 (EST)

Suspected DCs for: Locks, Secret Doors and Traps[edit]

I'm not that familiar with the Wiki "Message" functions and etiquette, so just in case I'll link to my: User_talk:Dywypi response about the proposed TABLE changes: Template talk:DDOip DC, etc. :-) Dywypi (ContribsMessage) 14:29, February 14, 2020 (EST)

News Flash: Secret Door (Spot DC) changes
Refer to: Update 46 Preview 1. It looks like; I was probably correct about generic Secret Doors erroneously not having a Spot DC of greater than 1 - like my testing seemed to imply. It certainly confirms the Spot values never scaled correctly. Anyway, the DDO Developers are now planning on changing the Spot formula for: Secret Doors. Back to square one. ;-)

Dywypi (ContribsMessage) 07:25, March 18, 2020 (EDT)

You probably won't have had time to read the latest Discussion: User_talk:Dywypi; April 7, 2020. Its regarding 'Spot and Search' and the feedback, via PM I received from DDO Content Designer (FlimsyFirewood). That confirmed "Spot" for Secret Doors never scaled past DC: 1. Plus my current views about (Spot and Search) Casual values past: Level 4, etc. :-)
Furthermore we'll now have to address: https://ddowiki.com/page/Category:Pages_where_template_include_size_is_exceeded Faltout's, general idea seems sensible, although of course we're still dealing with the [Spot and Search] currently. It's your template(s) that have grown the page size, and I'm not familiar with: Wiki Template creation rules.
