Hello,

I will rather look at spelling mistakes, words missing, hyperlinked words missing, etc. , since I'm not very familiar with the rules system as such. Alrik (ContributionsMessage) 09:56, May 25, 2012 (EDT)

Well welcome! If you need any help or have any questions, don't be afraid to ask.. You may also find help on our IRC channel, which may or may not be faster if you are in a hurry. Big Grin ShoeMaker (Contributions Message) 11:28, May 25, 2012 (EDT)

I indeed have a question : When I'm looking on the "All Spells" list here Category:All_spells , there are some schools mentioned, like Abjuration and Conjuration, but others not (like Evocation).

A) Why is this ?
B) why can't I edit this page ?
C) What has caused that there are some schools listed and others not ?→ Alrik

A) None of the spell schools belong in a category that is defined as a list of spells (I have removed Abjuration and Conjuration).

B) You can edit the page, however, that is not a "regular page". It is a Category page. This basically means that all of the pages that are listed there, have a code embedded someplace within them that put them on that page. In order to add or remove, you need to go to the page in question that should be linked there and add or remove the appropriate codes to make them show up in the category. If you do this, you must be patient, it often takes more than an hour for your change to actually to effect due to the way that the server caches pages and categories.
C) My previous two answers actually answer this question as well (I hope)... The link that I provide in section B) to MediaWiki's Category Help page should help provide you with more details of how categories work. ShoeMaker (Contributions Message) 16:51, May 25, 2012 (EDT)

Hello,

thank you for this explanation ShoeMaker (Contributions Message) 10:20, May 26, 2012 (EDT)

You are welcome... In order to make our posts look professional as much as we possibly can, we use the Template:Post to write messages on talk pages. The format for this template is simple, you start your post with "{{SUBST:Post|" then you put in a number to represent the indent of the post which is usually the post before yours plus one. (In this the case of this post, your post before mine was level 5, so this post is level 6). The exception to this is if your post is the very first post on a subject, then it is indented "0". Next you put in the code so that your response will be automatically signed and date & time stamped for you which looks like "|~~~~|" Now you have the base work done and it is time for your comment or post. There are a couple of "reserved symbols you should know how to escape to make them show up correctly. The Post template does not like = (equal signs), | (pipes), or < (less than symbols). If you need to put one of these symbols, you will need to use: {{=}}, {{!}}, or < respectively. Once you are done typing out your comments, the final step is to close the post with a pair of curly brackets like "}}" So, lets say you wanted to start a new discussion thread on my talk page; your post might look like: "{{SUBST:Post|0|~~~~| What ever you want your post to say to me. }}" You may follow the link to the Post template I have linked to see these instructions more specifically with an example (If I remember correctly), look over most any admin's talk/discussion page, or ask me or any other admin on the wiki or on our DDO_wiki:IRC chat channel. Enhancements missing?[edit]

Hello, once again, I just found out that the "Follower of" enhancements are almost completely missing from the Wiki. I have a neutral good Drow Cleric which has several of these "Follower of" enhancements available, but none of them appear in this Wiki's Cleric Enhancements list. But they are at least listed in the Compendium : http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Category:Cleric_Enhancements - and if I type the search key word "follower", then i only get one Half-Elf ehancement called "Follower of the Sovereign Host". I believe these "Follower of" enhancements should be better incorporated into the Wiki, but I don't know how ... I don't even understand why some classes ? races ? get some of them and some not. And, most importantly, if they are mutually exclusive or not. Alrik (ContributionsMessage) 08:00, July 31, 2012 (EDT)
I personally don't currently have time to put them all in... You are more than welcome to do the best that you can in creating them, and I would be happy to check them and give you any advice or help along the way that I can. Cool Face
ShoeMaker (Contributions Message) 12:04, July 31, 2012 (EDT)
Are you looking for information about Faith based enhancements? I can also see them on the Cleric enhancements page. --Cru121 (ContributionsMessage) 07:13, November 21, 2012 (EST)

Yes, I found it, too. I had the impression as if this was added after my question here, but I'm nort sure, because I haven't followed this for a few months. By the way, I'm now thinking of an own small project : Translating major terms into my own language, German. I often have problems translating item names, enhancements, feats and whatnot into both English and German, so I thought that Wiki entries would be of help here.→ Alrik (ContributionsMessage) 07:34, November 21, 2012 (EST)

Try to use "Preview" if you can[edit]

Hi, and welcome to the Wiki! If you're editing, try to know the end-goal of your edits, and then try to use "Show Preview" to see if the final result matches your expectected goal. It's not ~always~ practical - sometimes, large or complex edits really do need more than one "Save changes", so you can then dive in again. And we all do it on occasion - "oops, didn't see that" is human. But, for example, with your recent edit of the Risia Ice Games page, 5 edits to add a single date... It's not a big deal (certainly no "apologiies" necessary), but it clutters up the log page, and can complicate things down the line, so just try to keep it in mind moving forward. Other than that, great work, thanks for joining the effort! C-Hound (ContribsMessage) 16:30, February 3, 2020 (EST)

I'm only doing only minor contributions ...[edit]

Hello, I'm still scared of the possibility to do something wrong, so I'm not doing as much as I perhaps could. My biggest try so far was to add a page for the Crystal Disc of Horros, of which actually no page and picture existed, which hugely surprosed me. If I become more confident, my additions may grow also. I'd especially like to see feedback here if I did something wrong, or, even better, right. I'm using my own talk page as some kind of "observatorium", because i just can't keep track of the pages I've been meddling with.

One thing I have found are "orphaned pages". If I can understand what they are about, then I might try to link them. There seem to be a lot of pages about NPCs, but no "umbrella" under which they could be linked.

One question I have is this : Do I have to do the signing sign in the summary box, too ? Alrik (Contribs⇑ top ⇑) 04:43, March 25, 2020 (EDT)

  • Edit whatever you feel comfortable with. My personal request would be to be sure that something is correct before editing it because the wiki doesn't have a lot of editors to correct mistakes (and thus it is FULL of mistakes). Your edits so far have been improving the information on the wiki and there is nothing wrong with that. About orphaned pages: This wiki is suffering from a couple of things. First, there aren't many editors to correct mistakes. Second, one of the active administrators breaks the information and structure in the wiki more often than not. Third, the structure of the wiki suffers from many years of ideas that didn't become standard. This means a lot, but what it means for the NPC pages is that they don't have a unified place they would fit. Until a solution has been found (or the rogue admin forces one - he's tried before), there is no to-go place to link the NPCs. The reason I'm mentioning the problems is because a solution would need to solve the root of the issue and not the leaves. What you have been doing is actually the best thing; If an NPC is mentioned in some page, use a link there. Faltout (ContribsMessage) 06:41, March 25, 2020 (EDT)
  • I have found that there exist lots of orphaned pages with trainers. I think it would be nice to have one "umbrella page" in which all class-specific trainers could be listed, similar to the category page : Bankers. I fear, however, that this would require to make up a new tag, like "Cleric Trainer", for example. Such a tag doesn't seem to exist now. Alrik (Contribs⇑ top ⇑) 13:25, March 25, 2020 (EDT)
Edit : I just found that such a category page already exists : https://ddowiki.com/page/Category:Cleric_trainers Alrik (Contribs⇑ top ⇑) 13:29, March 25, 2020 (EDT)
  • Welcome to the Wiki, and the good fight! I think your hesitations reflect those of the majority of new Wiki editors. Don't worry about it, you'll learn as you go. If you aren't sure about some code, find a similar page and copy/paste, making changes as appropriate - great way to learn. But maybe #1 rule - PREVIEW! You don't want to make 7 edits to change a date (and we've seen that, and worse) - but we've all done it. (I was pro'ly guilty once or thrice myself, aherm.) Just ~try~ to avoid it. My "/Wikicode" Userpage page is where I put a lot of the code that I find that I use often, but just didn't/don't have memorized cold - feel free to bookmark, or copy/paste, or whatever. And thanks for joining, and have fun! C-Hound (ContribsMessage) 14:52, March 29, 2020 (EDT)
  • Welcome indeed! I'm the administrator that Faltout is complaining about, and sobeit. I have a lot of works in progress. Some take longer to complete than others and the end result is always an easier to navigate and easier for new editors to edit wiki. As far as your hesitations go, you can't really break the wiki. If you think you've broke something, let me or any of the other people on the list of 18 Administrators know and we can undo/rollback any oppsie. Please also check out the wiki's Discord chat server server where you can often get real-time answers to questions and guidance. Happy to have you! 👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 16:29, March 29, 2020 (EDT)
  • Thank you. Now, I have more time than usual, maybe I'll do some more bits. Currently I'm thinking about the Cerulean Crest Of Wave cosmetic armor, please take a look at that page. Alrik (Contribs⇑ top ⇑) 17:39, March 29, 2020 (EDT)
  • Just created the Button of Winning page, in case you wonder who did that. I never tested the item itself so far. Alrik (Contribs⇑ top ⇑) 11:44, April 1, 2020 (EDT)

What is this ncl thing ?[edit]

I've come across pages that have some kind of script embetted within ncl, like this one : <ncl>Ooze type monsters</ncl> They don't seem to do anything, but I've found them in several places now where there would or should be a "category" listing. I'm confused. Alrik (Contribs⇑ top ⇑) 12:10, April 2, 2020 (EDT)

  • NCL stands for "NiceCategoryListing". NCL was phased out of this wiki with the latest MediaWiki update. When you find pages like that, replace the ncl part with {{ Category listing | category }} or {{#dpl:|category=...|mode=unordered}} if you want something nicer or {{#dpl:|category=...|mode=ordered}} if you want a numbered list or
    {{Div col|3}} {{#dpl:|category=...|mode=unordered}} {{Div col end}} to break the list into columns. Faltout (ContribsMessage) 14:30, April 2, 2020 (EDT)
  • Thanks. I'll look out for that. Alrik (Contribs⇑ top ⇑) 15:31, April 2, 2020 (EDT)

Spell Inscription materials[edit]

I think it would be a nice project to have a list of all requirements of inscription materials for spells available - or at least list these requirements on the spell pages themselves. Since I've had huge problems with finding out what materials require what spell inscription materials (I call this "The Lottery") since my beginning of playing, I have decided to add to each spell page the spell inscription requirements as I find them out. I'm very surprised that no-one undertook that yet. Everyone seems to know what's needed or have other resources than I have. A typical case of "Curse Of Knowledge" [article in Wikipedia] , I guess. Alrik (Contribs⇑ top ⇑) 13:14, May 1, 2020 (EDT) Additional note : Some scrolls can be inscribed for both Artificers and for Wizards. I'm currently mostly doing Wizard spell inscriptions. And i donÄ't even have any Alchemist character. So I cannot say whether there are scrolls which can be inscribed with all 3 classes. Alrik (Contribs⇑ top ⇑) 14:21, May 1, 2020 (EDT)
