Mystara/Known World map; the Isle of Dread is found in the south

Mystara, originally conceived as "Known World" by Lawrence Schick and Tom Moldvay, is a campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. It was first published as 1981 D&D Expert Set's adapted "default" setting for the product line.

PnP background[edit]

The "Known World" was used as background setting for various BECMI (Basic/Expert/Companion/Master/Immortal) line adventure modules throughout the 1980s. Then in 1987, it was developed into a complete campaign setting and Mystara Gazetteer series of boxed sets were released up until early 1990s, followed by Hollow World spin-off setting. By the mid-1990s "Basic" line of D&D products were discontinued, so the Mystara world materials saw transformation into Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition rules and new materials were released under moniker Red Steel and Savage Coast series, however this treatment proved to be unpopular among existing players and the line and the entire Mystara world was discontinued in the late 1990s. No new official material saw release ever since. However, there still is a community of enthusiastic players and ex-players online, and some fan-made materials poping up are can be seen even in 2010s.

Integration for Dungeons & Dragons Online[edit]

D&D: Shadow over Mystara is a popular arcade game released in 1990s. It is a belt-action hack and slash.
