Talk:DDO Wiki policy re "default" key mapping

From DDO wiki

Forums: Index > Village pump > DDO Wiki policy re "default" key mapping

Across this wiki, many articles include mention of UI key shortcuts and commands. Some list the default commands, some list them but specifically mention they are "by default", some do not mention them (or perhaps only abstractly). We really should have a single policy - or, if one exists, include it in a "DDO Policy" page (if we have one?) so we're all on the same page on this.

The logical options seem to be:

  • Not include any key map notes
  • List the key maps as found in vanilla DDO
  • List them as-is but always clarify that those are "by default"

Discussion[edit]

(Note - I, C-Hound, am creating this page by starting this discussion by quoting the counter-opinion of another editor that prompted it. I'm posting it first, since it was written first, here - fair is fair.) C-Hound (ContribsMessage) 17:06, January 20, 2016 (EST)

I am of the opinion that we should not be including any key inputs to access things as they are able to be changed. Simply mentioning that you can access these points in the Adventure Compendium is sufficient. Habreno (ContribsMessage) 20:39, January 19, 2016 (EST)

  • I am of the opposite opinion, that we should always list the default keys whenever possible, and without comment. We should be user-friendly to new players as much as possible. More, that's how it's found in the DDO Manual, and we should match that (right?). So, if discussing the Inventory screen, we mention that it "...can be viewed by hitting the [i] key..." - and leave it at that. If a player is sophisticated enough to re-map their UI keys, then they should remember which ones they've changed, and won't be confused if the Wiki tells them otherwise. • As the original poster, thanks for moving this to a better spot for further discussion. In response to your suggestion, perhaps we (the Wiki) could make a page that lists the default key bindings, and not include default key bindings in other locations (as an example taken from the Favor page:
"In-game, you can find specific information about quests completed and favor gained by hitting P (by default) and opening the Adventure Compendium."
"In-game, you can find specific information about quests completed and favor gained by opening the Adventure Compendium."
As a result, this could be written as the second line and would still be fine. Habreno (ContribsMessage) 21:17, January 20, 2016 (EST)
  • Interesting topic of discussion. I'm of the opinion that we really don't need to have a policy on this. I think it should be up to editors' discretion on each page/topic that has a default hotkey bound to it. Also note that there are technically three default "sets" of bindings (Default/FPS Style/Classic). I think that if there was to be an edit war about it, it could be settled fairly quickly as we are all mature individuals. That said, I encourage more discussion by more editors as these kinds of things need to be a community decision. ShoeMaker (ContribsMessage) 21:56, January 20, 2016 (EST)
