New maintenance template[edit]

I created this template to fill an apparent gap (and as an exercise). Apologies if it turns out to be redundant. Hoopy Froodle (ContribsMessage) 13:05, July 19, 2019 (EDT)

  • I think it's a good thing. I pulled this trigger recently, changing Sharn -> City of Sharn, based on the principal of action over inaction (that, and 2 disambigs at the top of that page looked cludgey) - but, once done, had second thoughts that maybe indeed I should have put it up for discussion first, if only pro forma. Regardless of that example, I think it's a good option to have. C-Hound (ContribsMessage) 19:02, July 22, 2019 (EDT)
  • I don't oppose the idea of the template, but I think it needs some changes. People shouldn't be posting this template at the top of a page every time they think the name of it is wrong and instead should just move the page 99% of the time instead. The only reasonable use case I can think of this is if someone renames the page and someone else doesn't like it. Then the person who doesn't like it should start a discussion on the talk page and if after a little back and forth no compromised/agreement is reached, and only then should such a template be used. It should read something like "Please join the discussion on a proposed rename of this (page|template|category|etc) to <proposed new name> on [[TALKPAGENAME]]. ~~~~" The template should then indicate on the DDO:AN/RM or some place similar that there is a discussion that needs assistance (like we do with Requested merges  using the {{Merge}} template).  👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 09:50, July 24, 2019 (EDT)
    • The counter to that is that "moving a page" responsibly includes changing all links to that page - possibly quite a major undertaking, and an almost equally major one to change it all back if someone (or more than someONE) disagrees. I can see where getting a consensus - or, at least, something like a straw poll of possible objections - would be wise in advance. Iirc (and I may well not), there is something similar currently in place involving a posted notice of "intent to do X" w/ a timeline where people can object, with their reasons, and if not enough object then it's cleared - or something like that? C-Hound (ContribsMessage) 15:58, July 27, 2019 (EDT)
      • A redirect is always created EXCEPT for an administrator who intentionally suppresses a the creation of a redirect. There is no need to change all incoming links most of the time for a page move. DDOstream (ContribsMessage) 11:59, July 31, 2019 (EDT)
        • FWIW, I concur with the essence of the various comments. That is, most of the time it's fine to just rename a page without discussion. However, there may be times, say, when a page is widely linked, and there's a concern about double redirects. Or you're not sure it's a good idea, and want to get opinions. Or you just don't want to step on anyone's toes. Better an ounce of prevention than a pound of edit wars. The case that prompted this, renaming Classes to Class, met all these criteria. (I eventually decided on my own it was a bad idea.)
I'm not wedded to the specific wording. I added DDO:AN/RN. Hoopy Froodle (ContribsMessage) 11:04, August 20, 2019 (EDT)
